The long wait is over as Metallica kicked off their first proper tour of North America since 2009 last night (May 10) in Baltimore at M&T Bank Stadium. Dubbed “Worldwired,” the trek is in support of the band’s latest LP, Hardwired…To Self-Destruct, which came out last November and recently went platinum.
The band unveiled a new set that featured a massive five-panel video screen, and opened with the new album’s lead single, “Hardwired.” In all, five songs were played from the disc, including “Atlas Rise!,” “Now that We’re Dead,” “Moth Into Flame” and “Halo on Fire.”
The show, which featured opening sets by Volbeat and Avenged Sevenfold, was heavy on hits and singles, with a total of 18 songs performed, along with solo spots from guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo. Drummer Lars Ulrich was joined on his solo by the rest of the band — including singer James Hetfield, who pounded away on large drums which were brought out. Nothing was featured from the previous two Metallica efforts, St. Anger and Death Magnetic, with just a snippet of “Bleeding Me” the sole representation from Load. “Seek and Destroy” closed out the main set with “Enter Sandman” wrapping up the encore.
